Carol Castro

Carol Castro, now of Wichita Falls, Texas, began her cake-decorating career in her countryside home in Engadine in the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Her first cake was for her big sister. God’s gift to her became apparent as she was able to squeeze out decorations from a stiff, metal press. Encouraged by her mother and friends, Carol acquired a pastry bag, and skill, using the Wilton method books to self-teach the art. It would be years later, and other careers, before God would turn her into the cake-decorating potter.

Upon graduating high school, she studied broadcasting in Southfield, Michigan and then worked in radio and newspapers in Northern Michigan. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Carol enjoyed nearly 10 years of service and travel to Turkey, Europe, Saudi Arabia, and all around the United States. She even earned an associate degree in Munitions Systems Maintenance from the Community College of the Air Force. During this time, she met her husband, Phillip. Together, they have three lovely girls. After leaving the service, she began studying for and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Valdosta State University in Georgia. It was her husband’s continuing commitment to the USAF that brought the family to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls in 2001.

Carol has operated her home pottery studio since 2003 and enjoys selling her one-of-a-kind cake-decorated creations made on the potter’s wheel. Clay, thinned down with a little water, is actually piped through the pastry bag. Rolling pins, turntables, and pastry tips are her basic tools, guided by a love for God and trust in him to move the business according to His will. Besides Jesus and cake-decorating, her pots’ shapes are also influenced by Turkish and Italian traditions. She has won several awards within the north central Texas area through her membership with the Wichita Falls Art Association and the Red River Quilter’s Guild.
